Help!

As a person who is obsessive compulsive (literally) about brushing her teeth ALL the time AND flosses every night AND does not drink soda, eat candy, and rarely eats sugary treats at alI, I feel like I should NOT EVER get cavities. But I did. My second one in my adult teeth. Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Any dental geniuses out there? I have even started using toothpaste from the health food store with no sweeteners in them. Baking soda? What else can I do?

I am also going to use this blog space to be mad at my dentist, whom I've always loved. I've gone to the same dentist since I was a kid, he even did my braces. He used to say things to me like, "BYU would let you in in a second if they knew how good your teeth were." And I am 26 and should be able to handle getting a filling. But I like people to tell me exactly what they are doing when they are using sharp tools on my body. And when he is clamping metal stuff to my gums I can not ask. So I'm silently freaking out with my eyes and he of course, doesn't notice, because he is talking to the hygenist about some people that live in St. Anthonly that I have no idea who they are. I know he does a million fillings a day and to him it is nothing, but to me, who is upset to tears that I have a cavity at all, it is a big deal. I guess I need to tell him that I want to know what he is doing before he starts going at my face. I'm not a person that is afraid of the dentist. I am just a person that thinks cavities SHOULD be preventable. Seriously, what can I do differently? What gives me these cavities? My google search has not been helpful. Does anyone know?

I've been told that the way your teeth are is hereditary, and if one of your parents is susceptible to cavities, you may be too. Sometimes there's not much you can do about it. I think you should be pretty stoked that you've only had 2 cavities!

P.S. I don't know if any of this is true, but I like to blame my parents for all of the cavities that I have! Maybe it's the poor air quality over there ;)

I agree with the above. I think it's mostly hereditary. Or it could be the smog in Utah County (ha-ha). We had the worst air quality in the nation this week.

Stay in Idaho.

The other commenters must be right. I've had just one cavity in my life, and I don't take very good care of my teeth. Please don't hate me.

Something that dentists hardly ever tell you is that some cavities can be prevented or teeth rebuilt (depending on the depth of the cavity) with using a flouride rinse every night (ACT or the like). Does your tooth hurt? Can you see the brown of the cavity? Some dentists will give you a flouride paste to use after you brush (but you may have to ask for the prescription). Do not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after using. Also, some dentists just want to make some money (sad but true) so be wary. :D Have a lovely day!
